Ancora Bags began as a way to re-use the beautiful linen napkins, tablecloths and towels lovingly hand made by my grandmother.
By re-purposing these exquisite, unused linens as the focal point of a tote bag, the handwork of my ancestors could continue to be enjoyed and admired. From this original idea grew the product line of Ancora; each bag type celebrating an aspect of re-purposed fabric or handwork, inspired by the traditional fabrics and patterns found in Western Maine.
Sourced in Maine, materials come from product manufacturers, fabric wholesalers and re-sale stores located in communities with a strong stitching heritage, such as Lewiston, Skowhegan and Farmington.
Ancora Bags combine remnants of awnings, blankets, clothing, shoelaces, jackets and upholstery with accent handwork of lace, crewel, embroidery, needlepoint or classic woven patterns to create totes that are truly unique. All bags feature standard tote details such as heavy-duty web handles, multiple pockets, a key fob and magnetic closures.
Materials are collected piece-by-piece and combined into kits which local seamstresses take home and assemble into Ancora Bags. The end product is a designer quality, locally sourced and handcrafted bag, inspired by the traditionally functional Maine tote. Each bag has been created with loving care, waiting to be owned, used and given a new life.
